Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to officially inform you that
the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) was admitted
to Membership of the General Association of International Sports
Federations (GAISF) by a majority vote of 38 for and 33 against
(52%) on 27th April 2007. The decision, in favour of the IDBF
came despite a strong objection from the International Canoe
Federation (ICF) who claimed that Dragon Boating was an active
discipline of canoeing.
The rejection of the ICF objection and election of the IDBF
to GAISF Membership, means that the GAISF Members have agreed
with the earlier GAISF Council decisions, made over the past
three years, that the IDBF is the World Governing Body for Dragon
Boating; that Dragon Boating and Canoeing are two different
paddle sports and that the IDBF is not in conflict or rivalry
with the ICF.
You are asked to inform both your National Sports Agency
and National Olympic Committee of the GAISF decision and request
recognition from them, as and where appropriate, for your own
status as the National or Territorial Governing Body for Dragon
Boat Sport for your Country or Territory.
You are also requested to inform your own National Canoe
Federation, where appropriate or necessary, of the GAISF decisions.
In closing this notification, I would like to express the
thanks of the IDBF Council, to the Chinese Olympic Committee,
the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Organising Committee (BOGOC);
the Chinese National Sports Federations; the Chinese Dragon
Boat Association; IDBF President, Mr Zhang Faqiang; former GAISF
Vice President, Mr Paul Henderson and Mr Wei who presented the
IDBF case in reply to the ICF objections, all of whom supported
the IDBF and who lobbied the GAISF Members on behalf of the
IDBF.
We should all now look forward to developing our sport still
further and welcome anyone into our own Membership, who wishes
to work within our Dragon Boat Family for the betterment of
Dragon Boating world wide.
Yours in friendship and paddle sport,
Mike Haslam
IDBF Executive President
